Gundagai

The Gundagai climate is mild-to-warm, despite its proximity to Young (80km) and Tumbarumba (80km). This is simply because the latter are elevated, whereas Gundagai is 'down on the plain'. The climate is an inland version of the Mediterranean type with the characteristic features of steep temperature gradients between day and night and summer and winter, which are known to enhance wine quality, particularly in red.

The temperature profile of the growing season is ideal for the production of the riper styles of Shiraz and Mediterranean varieties such as Tempranillo and Touriga Nacionale. Over the last four years, 650 hectares in the Gundagai region have been planted to wine grapes, predominately Shiraz.
